Captain Malcom Reynolds finds himself running from a skilled Alliance operative who wants River Tam, and who will stop at nothing to get her; meanwhile, River’s capabilities become more clear to the crew of Serenity.
Serenity was directed by Joss Whedon and stars Nathan Fillion as Captain Malcolm Reynolds.
I have never seen the Firefly series, despite its recent showing on the Sci Fi channel. I was a bit dubious about watching a movie based on a television show I’d never seen and could understand why my husband had the same reluctance. The could be that problem that the movie relies heavily upon the TV series and so those who have never seen the series, miss out on in-jokes, plot points and other stuff. Serenity stands by itself as a very good movie. If you’ve never seen the series, you haven’t missed anything important.
It is a story all on its own and this is what kept my attention and kept me entertained. I enjoyed the humor and I also enjoyed seeing “unknown” actors in a movie that could easily have been ladled with bigger talent.
After seeing this movie, I’d really like to see the series itself.
Strangeness Sidenote: So I won’t forget this (and don’t ask me HOW I’d forget this) but anyway… As we had gotten our tickets early, we waited in a casual line outside the theatre while we waited for the doors to open. Hubby wandered off to look at the movie posters while I sort of stared at two odd groups waiting to see the movie. One group was about six or seven people all dressed in costumes from the Firefly series. Not too terribly odd. We’ve gone to other movies where folks have dressed up. The second group was truly strange. Ten young (cough), pretty men all dressed in costumes from movies starring Jonathan Rhys Meyers. Please note, Meyers wasn’t IN Serenity. So yes, this was weird and I just had to stick my nose in and find out what was going on. So, I snagged the fellow dressed like Steerpike (from Gormenghast) and asked what was up.
ME: Hello. Clearly you fellows are fans of JRM (this elicited a sigh from all of them and a hand clap from one!).
SteerpikeJRM: Yes, we are.
ME: I’m pretty certain he’s not in this film, so why are you all dressed so lovely?
SteerpikeJRM: We’re fans of Firefly, too, but don’t have the costumes. We have these and wear them any chance we get.
I chatted with them a little longer and then the doors were opened. I’m thinking, that I really need to attach my camera to myself, since I miss such great photo opportunities.
