Dead Witch Walking – Kim Harrison

This series by Kim Harrison was recommended to me by a friend about a year ago. My Sci Fi Book Club had the first two novels in a combined book, “Dead Witch For Hire” that I had on my wishlist. I finally bought the book and recently finished the first novel, and I loved it!

The heroine of the book is Rachel Morgan, a witch who has just left the company she works for; a type of law enforcement agency. The world Rachel lives in is populated by werewolves, vampires, living vampires, pixies, faeries, and of course witches. But, no elves. Called Inderlanders, they live somewhat alongside humans. Years before, the human population was nearly decimated by a deadly virus carried by: tomatoes. Pizza is no longer loved by humans.

When Rachel leaves the I.S., she is also accompanied by her friend and fellow worker, Ivy Tamwood, a living vampire. Ivy is able to buy out her contract, but Rachel can’t, and before she knows it, Rachel has a death threat following her.

As Rachel does her best to survive the death threat, she is aided by Jenks, a smart-talking, swaggering pixie. There is humor and *cough* biting wit throughout. Harrison grabs the reader by the neck and doesn’t let go until the very last sentence.
