As some of you may know, my brother Jack, the fantastic musician, has produced his first solo album and is selling it on CDBaby.com. Jack tells me that the fellow that runs CDBaby started the company by producing his own music and selling it. He found out that there were other independant musicians that needed his services. For many months he rode to his post office on his bicycle loaded down with CDs.

Since I am endorsing Jack’s album here on my site, and in essence, promoting CDBaby as well, I wanted to experience the shopping experience, and also send a friend a gift. Of course it was easy and painless, but the culmination of the “experience” came in the form of this letter (email) I received that confirmed my CD purchase was on its way:

Your CD has been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CD and polished it to make sure it was in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CD into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of Portland waved ‘Bon Voyage!’ to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, Tuesday, July 25th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did. Your picture is on our wall as ‘Customer of the Year’. We’re all exhausted but can’t wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you once again,

Derek Sivers, president, CD Baby
the little CD store with the best new independent music

Of course I’m going to ask you to buy Jack’s CD (the link is in the sidebar) but also visit CDBaby and check out the music from other independant musicians. You might just wind up with a lovely little letter like this of your own.
