I Still Want To Own Barbossa, but

… I wouldn’t mind having this fellow either. They also have a rather cool looking Davy Jones that also talks. This Jack Sparrow is motion sensor… meaning, it would be fun to set it up so everytime the dogs passed by, he’d say something and scare the bejeebus out of them.

I love my furry kids, don’t you know?

If you’re a freak for Halloween (or a freak in general) take a look at this catalogue, Things You Never Knew Existed. There are definately some really twisted things there.

I do have to wonder, though, about some of their more ghoulish and grisly products. The section of masks that they have are really horrorific, nightmarish things. I don’t ever recall Halloween being that grisly when I was a kid. It’s a shame to see that the scares that were so simple when we were kids, have fallen by the wayside for such terrors as Leatherface and the clown from Saw. Scaring your neighbors kids with a simple skull mask is one thing, but jumping out at them with a mask where your skin has been ripped off just doesn’t seem right.

We don’t have children and kids rarely come to our house on Halloween. It’s something we have to unfortunately discourage since hubby is usually asleep. So, I’m pretty much out of it in regards to what is acceptable as far as Halloween goes.

Z.Z. awwww it’s too bad Halloween really was a scary time for you. :(

Bev, it is sad to see how things are changing for kids nowadays. We had good memories, I hope the kids have them, too.

Halloween at our house is really kind of erratic. First thing I have to do is tie up Domino, our boxer, so that he won’t attack the kids with his tongue when they come to the door. He loves kids and wants to make friends with everyone he meets. Then I usually have to haul out the make-up for the kid and try to make him into whatever it is he’s decided to be. We run around the house looking for everything he needs (good lightbulb for the outside light, flashlights, something to hold the candy in, and the special Halloween bowl we use to put our candy that we’re going to give out.

We have a door banner of a witch that is put up, there’s always a carved pumpkin on the steps, and I have several CDs of Halloween sounds and songs.

I remember Halloween as great! Of course when I was a kid it was a much safer time. There wasn’t a need to inspect everything and the kids could wander around without worrying about anyone grabbing them or hurting them. We had our favorite houses to go to which always had the best treats. One house I remember the dad worked for Wonder Bread and every year they gave out these little tiny loaves of Wonder Bread. Another house always gave out full sized candy bars and another gave out quarters. Back then a quarter would buy a comic book and a coke.

A T-Shirt I have now is black and has “This is my Halloween Costume!” in neon orange is what I wear now although I would really like to dress up in something scary. Not bloody scary but witchy scary. I don’t remember the costumes I wore when I was a kid. The best memory I have of Halloween was one that I couldn’t even go on. I got the mumps and had to stay home, but my Grandmother went Trick or Treating for me and brought me a huge bag of candy the next morning. I couldn’t eat it for awhile, but that was fine. I had candy when everyone else had already gone through theirs.

I really do miss those times but I guess that comes from aging a bit. Things were always better in our memory.

    1. Boring — will live in an old fart neighborhood
    2. A little — mostly pumpkins, cornstalks and the like
    3. Dangerous — I grew up in Brooklyn NY
    4. Street Bum — needed to blend in with the neighborhood

Oh Fred… you just reminded me of a photo I need to upload. I’ll try to get to it later today.

Margie – love your reply. Has to be the most creative comment ever!

Great Andrea! Always good to get a head start on those costumes.

Stephanie – I wasn’t really sure whether or not Halloween was celebrated in England. Not unless it’s under the guise of something else.

    1) Nonexistent. Something strange is afoot here in the city of Savannah and the reasonings unspoken. The word Halloween is even whispered or mouthed inaudibly as if there was something to dread if said aloud. Ghosts, Goblins and Ghouls appear so frequently they seem to be oblivious to the fact that there is a set Eve for Hallowed Spirits dedicated to them. Haunted Ghost Tours, Sea Cruises and nature walks take place in this great city 365 days a year and our guests never leave Savannah disappointed.

    2) My decorations are limited to celebrate the arrival of the autumn season and harvest. Each year I purchase 4 bales of Hay to later mulch my gardens and protect my fragile flower bulbs from the slight chance of frost. I usually purchase a few pumpkins down at the Farmer’s market and always make a Scarecrow family of three. I’ve found that decor of ghosts, goblins or witches tickle the curiosity of the Hallowed Spirits who have absolutely no cooth when it comes to appropriate visiting hours. Often waking young children at ungodly hours of the night and causing our Basset Hounds to howl in protest of the sudden silent nights. Silent nights absent of chirps, hoots and tree frogs that provide a choir of comfort during the spring and summer seasons. A silence giving every creature the sense of fear in the air and the urge to hide under your covers.

    3) As a kid back in New Jersey, Halloween was all the rage. Mischief night ushered in October 31st as we’d dress in dark Ninja gear and sneak out to vandal unsuspecting neighbors. Many were horrified by this night alone especially if they behaved in such a matter the previous year leaving accounts rendered overdue. From the grouchy old hermit who wouldn’t let us have our ball back that bounced over his fence to the Mysterious Purple lady with the Purple robed lawn ornament Madonna gracing her garden wall. About the only conspiracy that tortured the residents of this small Catholic town.

After a night of soaping, egging and TP’ing mischief came Halloween. We dressed up for school, had parties in school, had parties at home and at 6pm set out to go door to door soliciting treats to fill up our pillowcases. Mischief still abounded for there was a “Trick” involved in the soliciting. I’d expound further however, I am not so certain that the seven year limitation applies to some of the tricks I had pulled. Today, 30 years later I could very well be accosted and held accountable for said certain “Hate Crimes.”

    4) My favorite Halloween Costume of all would be back in the ’70′s when I dressed up like a Crayola Crayon. There was one home in particular where an adult party was going down while I knocked on their door to solicit for treats. The heavy fog of skunky smoke bellowed out from the front door when a Tie-dye T-shirted long haired hippy lady answered. As the smoke cleared in the chill of the night air she looked down and spotted me. Shrieking with jolly joy she picked me up and brought me inside to meet her family of laid back stoners. As they laughed hysterically they said something to the tune that I was a Conehead. I being the young girl that I was with a bedtime of 8pm had never witnessed the SNL 11pm skits of Dan Akroid or Eddie Murphy. I was quite popular and they hooked me up with lots of candy. My favorite was a sheet of paper with a smiley faced lick’em tattoo – so I thought. I’ve been tripping every 7 years when the clock strikes midnight on October 31st since. In fact, I think I’m due for another recall this coming season.

Halloween was my favorite holiday as a kid but we really don’t decorate much for it anymore. Now that we have a daughter, we are getting back into decorating for holidays. Jenna is going to be a pirate this year!

Halloween was awesome when I was a kid. I lived in the city, so there were loads of people out on Halloween.

My favorite costume is dressing up like Kiss. The best costume that I ever made was a robocop costume for my brother. I make the whole thing from cardboard and tin foil.

  8. Hallowe’en isn’t a big deal in our house. I don’t remember it really being that big a deal when I was a child either, although I do recall that the Brownies and Guides used to have parties for Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night combined which would usually include fireworks, costumes and games like apple bobbing. We don’t really do much now though and we’ve never decorated.
