Dog Saga, cont.

24 Sep

I didn’t really expect Animal Control to call back and they didn’t disappoint me. This evening I cut up an old gallon milk jug, tied string to it and filled it with dog food. He had the dog food eaten in about 5 minutes. I then pulled the half jug up and filled it with water. That was decimated in short order, so I filled it again. He went to sleep against the fence.

This is killing me.

I’ll call Animal Control bright and early tomorrow morning, since it will be Monday. If they don’t do anything, and hubby and I don’t see a sign of life over there (wife is a schoolteacher and hubby is in construction – so they have jobs and it’s weird they’re not home tonight) we’re going to call the police at 5pm. At this point, even though we’ve seen a teenager over there once or twice (we can’t tell if he’s their kid) we’re getting worried about the family as well.

I’m still hoping that the parents went on vacation in the hopes they left a responsible teenager at home; who turned out to be an idiot.

UPDATE: Sept. 25 morning – Animal Control finally called back. An officer will be sent over to the house today with a 36-hour ticket. The ticket is left if no one answers the door. If they don’t hear from an adult within 36 hours, they return with the police to remove the dog.

  1. ah, poor baby! are you still feeding him? what kind of dog is he? certain breeds are deemed unadoptable by animal control, and they may decide to just euthanize him. I gotta go.

that seems like a long time to wait for any action.

I have little or rather not so little basset hounds with woofs the size of Rottweilers. =O)

They would be devastated if we locked them outside. They have a Doggie door and a fenced in yard to run in but they can always come back inside whenever they please.

They bark – but usually because something or someone strange is around. Which can be a good thing at 3am in the morning. Scares the suspect away and alerts us.

Your Big Guy next door most likely misses his family and can’t understand why he can’t go inside anymore. He is sad. =O(

Hopefully the family next door is ok and something terrible didn’t happen. Anyways, it’s good to hear that you are helping the dog.

My heart goes out to you, Jayne. And I recognize from what you wrote it isn’t even the barking so much as the aching in the heart when a dog is just bloody neglected. I’m so happy you did the best you could do by providing at least the necessities of life. Although the laws are improving when it comes to pets, they still have a very long way to go. Only the most ‘extreme conditions’ occasionally bring a reaction, but even those often don’t.
