We went and saw Pan’s Labyrinth, directed by Guillermo del Toro. It is a magnificent movie. The trailers, which often have a habit of giving away the best scenes of movies, are the perfect teaser. They draw you in, but the movie itself is wholly unexpected.
“Pan’s Labyrinth” is the story of a young girl who travels with her pregnant mother to live with her mother’s new husband in a rural area up North in Spain, 1944, after Franco’s victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Fascist repression towards the end of World War II (1944) is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.
del Toro is the director of Hellboy (and the soon to come, Hellboy 2) which is another big favorite movie.

Need to see this one. And Hellboy, man I love those comics, I still haven’t seen the movie, I’ve heard it was really good.
I loved this movie. I haven’t felt compelled to go to the movies in a long time but after reading the reviews, I just had to see it. I’ve like most of del Toro’s previous movies but this one was probably the best.
My partner and I saw Pan’s Labyrinth a few weeks back. I don’t remember how we happened to stubmle across it, but what Jayne said about the previews is right. They draw you in, but don’t give anything away.
I think it should be called “The Faun’s Labyrinth” though – “Pan” is misleading, as the character is not “the” Pan of mythology, but a faun.
Really an awesome movie, but not for the squeamish, on a number of levels.
I need to start watching more TV, or at least the commercials. I never heard of this movie. Can’t wait to see Hellboy 2, though!
