The Coffers of ROME Are Empty

HBO says that the show, originally viewed as a mini-series has become too costly to produce.

I just watched the season finale of Rome and am so sad that HBO has decided not to renew it. The budget for the first season was reported at nearly $100 million.

There are 12 episodes in each season, each an hour in length. Compare that to some of the movies that have been made since Kostner’s Waterworld in 1995, and $100 million for Rome is just chump change.

Take a look. . . here is a partial list of The Most Expensive Movies Ever:

  • X-Men: The Last Stand – 2006 – $210,000,000
  • King Kong – 2005 – $207,000,000
  • Superman Returns – 2006 – $204,000,000
  • Titanic – 1997 – $200,000,000
  • Spider-Man 2 – 2004 – $200,000,000
  • The Chronicles of Narnia – 2005 – $180,000,000
  • Troy – 2004 – $175,000,000
  • Waterworld – 1995 – $175,000,000

I think HBO should bite the bullet and go for another season.
