Summer Knight by Jim Butcher

07 Jun

This is the fourth book in the Dresden Files series.

I can’t get enough of Harry Dresden’s adventures and hope that there will be more stories after the ninth book, Winter Knight. This particular story, which mostly takes place in that dimension between realities; the Nevernever, came pretty close to testing my patience.

The basic gist is that the champion of Summer, the Summer Knight, was murdered and the Queen of Winter has been accused of the crime. Winter hires Harry to solve the murder and to make certain that balance between the Nevernever powers remains in balance. Due to a deal made with his faery godmother, Lea, Harry finds himself between a rock and a hard place. That spot becomes even smaller as it appears that the ruling wizard council, the White Council, has convened and Harry’s life is once more hanging by a thin thread. Harry, who is blamed for the Red Court of Vampires declaring war on the White Council, has to not only prove his worthiness to keep his wizard status, but keep his friends safe AND do the right thing. Doing what is right, though, is tough to do when the lines of who’s right and who’s wrong begin to blur almost immediately.

This story is a soap opera and a couple of times I found myself having to take a break so that I could figure out who was who and what was what. It came close to stretching my patience. However, as part of the continuing saga in the series, it was worth it to get to the last page, and satisfied with the ending.

I have four more Dresden books on order and it will be a week before they arrive. So in the meantime I have recently finished the latest novel by Dean Koontz and am on book five of my re-reading of the Harry Potter books.
