I really don’t like Kevin Costner. He makes good movies, if a bit long, but he has that egocentric air about him that just tends to rub me the wrong way. Despite that, Mr. Brooks is a brilliant and psychologically terrifying movie. There are some “gotcha” scares, and some gross bits, but the most terrifying part of the movie is the first time he kisses his daughter goodnight.
This movie really lets you into the mind of a serial killer, with a conscience. He believes he’s an addict, not a monster. Weekly AA meetings have kept his hunger quiet for two years, but it’s come back.
The movie has some really excellent twists and turns and William Hurt is very intriguing as “Marshall”.
Demi Moore is in the movie and although she was good, why they had to make her a multi-millionaire cop that “doesn’t need the money” was a bit stupid. I think her part could have been played just as well if she were a cop on a normal payroll like all of the others.
Kevin Costner has been quoted as saying this will be a trilogy. I almost hope it won’t be because I think two more would have a tough time living up to the first.
