The Older You Get

28 Jul

The more things fall apart. My husband has been dealing with pain down his hip for two weeks. He likes sleeping on a rock hard mattress, but it’s like sleeping on metal now. The springs are hitting just those nerves that get all fired up with pain. He’s coming to the conclusion that he may have to sleep on an air mattress.

Several years ago, after my hysterectomy, I wound up having to let go of my moderately firm mattress for a much softer one. I slept on my side and when I woke in the morning, my left leg just didn’t want to support me. It took, literally three years to find the right mattress. I sleep on a pillow top mattress that has an additional 5 inches of tempurpedic foam. That’s pretty cushy and helps. The buggy thing is that all the fancy bedspreads, quilts etc., which I love and could now afford, absolutely do not fit our bed anymore.

So it goes.

I’m still reading a lot. Still missing Harry Potter and I’m still mulling over the ending. There’s so much of it that I think could have been better written. And, all the deaths… I think there were too many. This series began as a series for children and maybe I’m a little “pollyanna” in regards to children’s books, but the ending was far too dark. The lame epilogue did not soften the blow.

I suppose the fan fictioners are going to go full tilt on writing their own endings now.

I’m also nearing the end, sort of, of the Dresden Files series. I’ve a ninth book to read and there is a tenth book coming out in 2008. I may have to fill that gap with something else.

Some of the authors I’m reading now are:

Kathy Reichs – her stories were the basis for the TV show, Bones. I don’t think I’ll read any others in the series. I liked the show better than the book I read.

James Rollins – He gets accused, a lot, of inaccuracies in his stories. I didn’t notice them in Subterranean and so I’m going to continue reading his books.

Laurel K. Hamilton – Bleah. Sorry, but it’s not even good erotica. I don’t usually throw books away, but this one hit the trash very quickly.

Kim Harrison – just heard she’s got another book in her Dead Witch Walking series, and I’ll be grabbing that.

Hellboy – I’m reading both the novels and the graphic novels. What can I say but that I love the Big Red guy.

Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series – since these graphic novels are starting to get pricier, I’ve decided to get reading them. I finished the first volume and was pretty impressed.

I’m still not a comics book fancier, but I concede, there are some worthy comics out there.
