Hepatic Lipidosis or FFLS

05 Aug

Feline Fatty Liver Syndrome is what Mimi has. The survival rate is about 40 percent. The gist of what’s happening is that her body is consuming itself. Our vet hopes that we caught it early since she hasn’t shown signs of tremors, vomiting, and jaundice. The fact that she responded to the antibiotic is also a good sign. The tough part is that we MUST get her to eat. It’s really hard finding something that she likes consistently and although we’ve gotten her to eat a few bites of turkey, ham and tuna, it’s not enough. She needs to eat at least a “Fancy Feast” sized can of food a day.

Monday I’ll be picking up some medicine that’s supposed to stimulate her appetite. I hope it works. The next thing to do is force feeding with a feed tube; both a traumatic and expensive prospect. Richard and I discussed it this morning and have decided that if things progress to a feeding tube, we will have Mimi put to sleep.

Our other cat, Johann, died from a more virulent form of FFLS that attacked his pancreas.
