Writing projects seem to have a short shelf life in the internet ether, and good writing projects appear to have an even shorter life. Visitors rarely understand what goes on behind running such a site and often forget that it is one person running the show and somewhere on the planet that someone has a life with a job, family, kids, dogs and cats.

Flashes of Speculation is of those writing projects that’s needed in this virtual world of personal blogs, political punditry and MySpace styled cacophony. It is that breath of mental fresh air you need between meetings, it is that moment that draws you into contemplation and it is that thrill of another world that touches you before you sleep at night.

When I first heard of Flashes of Speculation it was already teetering on the edge of apathy and the outside forces of real life. In the blink of an eye it was indefinitely shut down. So, you can bet I was pleased to hear the announcement that Flashes of Speculation (affectionately abbreviated to FoS) had been re-launched. Sporting a brand new theme that showcases the writing, the site is now ready for the imaginations of writers who wish to submit their work and visitors who require new and fascinating reading material.

So, just what is Flashes of Speculation? From the About page:

Flashes of Speculation is dedicated to the sharing of works of flash fiction in the genre of speculative fiction. This includes science fiction, fantasy, horror fiction, supernatural fiction, alternate history, or magic realism.

Go over and visit now. Get your coffee, sit down to lunch and spend some time there. If you enjoy Flashes of Speculation, let your friends know by word of mouth and by blogging about it. You won’t regret it!

Speculative fiction is a term which has been used in multiple related but distinct ways. Speculative fiction is a type of fiction that asks the classic “What if?” question and attempts to answer it.

It was a great experience, though and despite the fact that it didn’t come to fruition, I hope everyone that participated came out with something positive. I did.

I thought maybe it had, which is a shame. It was a good idea, but sounds like it had a lot of things working against it.

I received this email from Jim today too. FOS has been inactive for a while. I have talked to Jim since he stepped down from the 100 voices project. I wonder if he even knows that it crashed and burned.

Thanks for the gracious announcement, Jayne! I’m very pleased to bring FoS back out of cryo. It’s been on my list for awhile now. I really do love the site and enjoy getting to read so much good flash fiction, and I’ve missed the heck out of it these last few months. Now to see if I can, with the help of readers and contributors, actually build a decent community out of it.
