National Treasure: Book of Secrets

13 Jan

Yesterday was the movie I’d been anticipating, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, the sequel to the original National Treasure. I’ll just say right off this movie does have a few flaws. It doesn’t flow as well as the first one, and the object of their frantic search seems to change. Not to mention, there are quite a few historical errors. But, this doesn’t matter. Our favorite characters are back, Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage), Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger). Ben’s father (Jon Voight) is back as well, but he now figures in as a main character, too. Two new characters are added to the mix, Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) the bad guy, and Emily Appleton (Helen Mirren) Ben’s mother.

This movie delves a bit more into each character, especially Ben’s parents and you get a rather good idea of why Ben is the way he is. The director was smart in following the formula of the first; throw the characters into impossible situations, and let them go. FBI agent Sadusky (Harvey Keitel) is back, too, just to make sure that all the loose ends are legally and properly tied up.

Clues take us to France, London and back to the United States. Private offices of two very prominent leaders are breached, and there is a kidnapping, too. And, wow, we’ve finally got a hot looking president, well played by Bruce Greenwood.

Any flaws the movie might have are easily forgotten as we follow Ben, Abigail and Riley in the search for proof of the Gates’ good name. Hot on their heels is the trigger happy Mitch Wilkinson, a descendant of John Wilkes Booth. Mitch publicly smears the Gates’ name by apparantly being in possession of a damaging document that lists Thomas Gates as one of the Lincoln assassination conspirators.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets is a fun movie to watch on a Saturday, or any day of the week. Plus, it appears that there might even be a third movie. That would be fine by me!

If there WILL be a third movie, I’m crurious if it is possible to contact the writers; I have an idea involving a new character and I really want to get involved!

  2. Didn’t like this second installment of what could be a very amusing movie series. The entire treasure hunt in this movie wasn’t at all relevant to the initial purpose set up in the beginning. Just didn’t make sense.

Sean Bean is the bad guy actor in the first one. And he waffled between good and bad, too. Ed Harris at least redeemed himself at the end.

My husband gets stuck on the flaws, but I don’t care. I didn’t watch this for historical content, but for the characters that I fell in love with in the first movie.

At the end, Ed Harris’s character was flip flopping between good and bad. That was annoying. I like him, and they should have done a better job of stabilizing his character, like the first bad guy. Who btw, is an awesome actor, too! He plays a hot bad guy. Too bad I don’t remember his name and too bad I am too lazy today to Google it.

Also, one big flaw- why bother hiding the treasure in that manner AT THAT TIME in history? What was the point??? That part was just lame!

Otherwise, I liked it! Lots of adventure and I think Mr Cage is hot hot hot!!!!

I noticed the historical flaws in this one, but there were a few in the first one as well. I stilled enjoyed it (it is a movie after all), and am really excited about a possible third movie.

  6. Jayne d'Arcy says:

My husband isn’t at all impressed with either movie and he was dismayed to learn that there could be a third movie.

  7. I finally sat down ans watched National Treasure the other night, and I’m not all that impressed by it. I probably won’t be forcing myself to watch this one either any time in the near future!
