This weekend, Richard and I went, on a whim, to see a movie by the Czech director Jiri Menzel called I Serve the King of England. It is subtitled and listening to the language added to the movie. It is BRILLIANT. My only caution is if you don’t care for full frontal nudity and sexual situations, you won’t care for this movie.
The basic story is that of Jan Dite, an older and a bit wiser man recently released from a 15 year prison sentence reflecting upon his far too naive youth. Dite’s aspirations, to one become a millionaire, leads him into odd situations; of course, Dite himself is a bit odd.
The movie is beautifully filmed and wonderfully presented. For those who are wary of subtitled movies, this was done quite well and was readable. My only disappointment was that the German parts of dialogue were left untranslated. It’s possible this was done on purpose since Dite was unable to understand German, and since the story is from his point of view, we’re not allowed to understand it either.
