The Crowner John Mysteries

19 Sep

Might he look like this?

I just began a new series of books, the Crowner John Mysteries, and I am ever so delighted to discover just how the hero is described, and portrayed. Here is his inscription direct from The Sanctuary Seeker by Bernard Knight:

…if this hawkish black beanpole was crossed, he might prove a handful of trouble. Ashe wrestled with the door Ralph looked covertly at Sir John de Wolfe and decided that the stern, sallow face, with deep furrows running down to the corners of the mouth, was that of a hard man. His great height and slightly hunched shoulders gave him the appearance of a bird of prey, ready to swoop on any wrong-doer.

Sir John de Wolfe also has “deep, black eyes”, has a “flinty appearance”, wears a black cape over grey, black boots, and breeches, and has long, straight, black hair.

Or this?

Once a knight in King Richard’s army during the Crusade, he was recently appointed King’s Coroner, called the Crowner; thus Crowner John. He has a patient and deliberate nature, but he is quick with a sharp word or insult if it gets someone off their backside.

Poor Crowner John is saddled with the shrewish Matilda whom he married mainly for the connections in her family to providing him with the sort of life he wanted. John does his best to prevent Matilda’s sharp tongue from lashing him too often and often takes refuge in the arms of his plump maid, or a comely tavern wench.

I think anyone who loves historical forensic mysteries will love these very well written books. I believe that they will be an extra treat for Severus Snape fans who might just see the beloved Potions Master in Crowner John’s boots. Perhaps Severus found himself lost back in time and made the best of a not entirely disagreeable situation. Let your imagination go!

Snape as Crowner John? Blasted Time Turners!

By the way, the first book by Bernard Knight, The Sanctuary Seeker, was printed in 1988. That’s nearly nine years before the first Harry Potter book hit the shelves. I wonder, did JK Rowling read these books by chance?

What’s your favorite movie?

All right. You can’t be serious about restricting me to just ONE movie! There are too many out there.

Let’s do it this way:

Favorite movie for 2010: Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2D) – I love just about everything Tim Burton does. I admit, though, that for months I was freaked out by the huge movie poster that had wide-eyed Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter right where you bought tickets. After I saw the movie, I quite liked his character much better… he was moving. A lot.

All Time Favorite Movie: This changes, of course. But right now, the one that keeps coming to mind, is Lilies of the Field with Sidney Poitier.

The Lovely Bones

24 Jan

We went and saw The Lovely Bones today. I haven’t read the book, but through criticisms I’ve read, the movie is nothing like the book. Several critics have claimed that the horror the young girl goes through is not shown to be horrid enough.

Personally, I felt that what was shown was pretty enough horrid. I happen to have a good imagination and I have no trouble in using it to enhance what I’m watching. I feel that it is his audiences imagination that Peter Jackson hoped to evoke with the way he made this movie.

So little is left to the imagination in movies, that you might as well be a nice little automaton staring at a huge movie screen. What is there to discuss, or debate, or even have scary little nightmares about if your imagination isn’t engaged?

Maybe this isn’t the movie the author of The Lovely Bones had wanted. I still think it was worth the afternoon and price of a ticket.

I Have Been Here Before

I am seeking a question.
