Marcus And the Vet

12 Jul

We had the mobile vet come and check out Marcus. He’s our 12-yr old dog. For the last two months he has been having what looked like joint pain with his back legs. He’s losing sensation in addition to joint pain due to the fatty tumors all over his body. A couple have pushed his hip slightly askew and that has caused a disk to slip. Surgery is far too expensive, but the vet says, with his age, it’s better to get steroid shots every three months and to use an anti-inflammatory. Before we know which one to go with, his liver function has to be tested and that was a great deal of the visit.

Marcus has never liked his feet being messed with so when the vet needed a blood sample for the liver test, that didn’t go over well. Four sticks, one in each leg, finally drew enough blood for the test. He was really upset over it and he still had to sit still for a toenail clipping and a shot to his spine.

He did better with the steroid shot. Did lousy with the toenails being clipped since he’d already reached the end of his patience with the vet. Since Richard had to hold onto him, I think he might not have been terribly happy with him, either.

After the visit, while the vet was preparing the bill, Marcus took this squeaky soccer ball we have and chewed the bejeezus out of it! He’s never made it squeak before since I think he doesn’t like the noise. This time, though, he was making the ball squeak to death.

On Wednesday we should know how his liver is and then we’ll see about getting him an anti-inflammatory.

Christmas Card Status

15 Dec

I only managed ten cards for Christmas today. I had to fight with the lights on the tree and I lost. Then, I had to fight with the post office. All I want to do is send something to a friend, but it’s threatening to turn into a nightmare, and that’s the post office’s fault for being little to no help.

Today was another good day and I am enjoying the feeling. I am slowly, but surely, losing the hesitation I’ve had in regards to my Spiritual beliefs, and my faith. I noticed recently that I feel more comfortable in practicing my faith. Although, “practice” doesn’t seem quite the right word. I am losing my … embarrassment (?) over letting others “see” what I believe, too. Witness all these rather Spiritual heavy posts of late.

I’m not sure when that shutting down of my spiritual side began, but I know there were several factors that contributed to it. The worst being that I’d been harboring anger at God for a long time – blaming Him for pretty much everything. That led to me hiding my faith from others because it “wasn’t cool”. Which is really dunderheaded as I long ago gave up trying to be “cool” and accepted by everyone for a perceived notion of who and what they thought I was.

I’m still odd, unconventional, fearful, confused, and at times (despite my meds) sad. Each day, though, is better than the last. It helps a great deal, too, that my panic attacks have settled, and so it seems has my pain.

I did have a goal of trying to get someplace to exercise (either swimming or stretching) and that failed miserably. For such a large city, Spokane is woefully lacking in swimming pools and the one inside one shuts down in winter. I am walking the dogs with the husband, but we’ll have to cut down on that soon. Our eldest dog, Marcus, isn’t entirely sure on his feet these days, and the last thing we need is for him to break a leg.

I am setting myself a new goal, which in addition to my general chickeness, it has the dubious honor of occurring on Sunday when buses usually don’t run.

There is an Episcopal cathedral here in Spokane. I knew that the Episcopal church had cathedrals, but I’d never seen one. I’ve only seen the outside of this one, but it is quite magnificent. I understand that their services are “high church worship” services. Lots of ritual, bowing, kneeling, standing – church aerobics.

I would like to go there for their Christmas service. It would also be wonderful to get my rosary blessed.

The thought of going to the church on my own terrifies me, at the moment. Mixing that in with iffy bus schedules, waking up on time, taking my meds, etc., that it seems so much could go wrong. It makes my stomach flip just thinking of it all.

WTHW: Thanksgiving Edition

25 Nov

Well, it’s Wednesday and I haven’t done a meme in a few days. Where’s Snape? He ought to do some of these. Maybe I scared him off. Ah well, here we are with the Thanksgiving Edition of What the Hell Wednesday:

1. This Thursday is Thanksgiving. Tell us something you are not looking forward to.

Pumpkin pie. Well, hmm, hubby says we’re not having any since the pumpkin pie will be at work. Cool. So I guess, technically, this means I’m NOT not looking forward to anything.

2. What is the one thing you are most thankful for this year?

The flawed master. Logospilgrim. Cindy. Marlene. Sam. Mom’s visit. The internet. Muscle Relaxants and Anti-Anxiety Medication. First Call for Help (Spokane). Jack and Jim (brothers). Richard (husband).

Oh. Did you say one thing?

3. Most families get together for the holidays. Are your family gatherings on the pleasant side or do they tend to be more drama filled?

My family likes phone calls and cards for holidays.

4. The President has decided not to call his tree a Christmas tree, but instead is calling it a Holiday tree. Do you think this is a good idea, just plain stupid or you could care less either way?

It’s stupid and I could care less.

5. Are you going shopping on Black Friday and if so are you insane?

Amazon.com. Nifty little place on the internet? You ought to try it. No crowds.

6. What is up with Santa and his Hos?

What?

7. Do you have any favorite holiday traditions?

Not anymore.

8. I am afraid my 2 year old will attack the Christmas tree this year (she has “oooo shiney” syndrome). What do you suggest I do to keep her from destroying the tree and running off with all the ornaments?

Give her a long garland of gold, silver, or even red or green. My mother just didn’t decorate the lower half of the tree for about 8 years.

9. What is the worst gift you have ever received?

How about criticism I receive (almost every year) after giving my little brother, Jack, a ten cent dinosaur for Christmas. This was over 40 years ago. Lesson learned: don’t give crappy, cheap gifts to little kids. Even if you’re a little kid who really thought it was a cool idea until Christmas Eve when he opened it.

10. Do [you] think Santa Claus is creepy?

Nope. We have a really nifty fellow here at Riverfront Mall who has a REAL beard.

11. How do you celebrate New Years Eve?

By sleeping.

12. Do you believe in re-gifting (aka giving someone else a present you got but don’t like)?

That is tacky and rude. Especially if you know you’ve been a re-giftee.

13. Are you one of those people who save the bows and undamaged gift wrap off of the opened gifts?

I like to decorate my dogs.
